Nuns and Public Libraries: The Power of Video

By Mike Lake

As a lover of video and someone who makes his living from creating multimedia, it’s easy for me to tout the benefits of this medium for a variety of applications. But, I recently ran across an interesting article that provided some statistics on the effectiveness of video for persuasion and retention of information. While the power of video may seem self-evident, it’s interesting to see some hard facts supporting it.

The Wharton School of Business did a study a while back on the effectiveness of video. Their research found that “video boosted comprehension and retention by 50% over a live presentation.” While the movement of imagery, along with the attractive ways in which information can be displayed visually might account for this, I believe much of the power of video…

Healthcare and Video: A Beautiful Relationship.

By Mike Lake

I recently met with the head of marketing for a very impressive hospital here in the northeast. What was impressive was not just the 5 star hotel ambiance of this beautiful facility, but the progressive thinking behind their desired marketing initiatives. We discussed hospital-wide blogging, podcasting, published chat sessions by doctors, viral campaigns, wikis and, of course, video!

It was our discussion regarding the many applications the hospital was considering for video that prompted this post. I do a great deal of video for the health care industry, and I want to dive into some of the ways that health care providers can use video. I’m sure we won’t cover every possible application, but let’s talk about a few of the most relevant uses for video.

What provides the health care industry with so many applications for video is the fact that they provide information critical to everyone: Our health. The information is rapidly changing, and it is often information that is…

Warwick, NY (June 12th, 2008) – Redlake Marketing, a strategically integrated national marketing firm with offices in New York and Tampa, has appointed Scott Gomez as Chief Operating Officer. “We are beyond excited to have someone of Scott’s caliber and experience join the Redlake Marketing team. Not only will he be responsible for steering Redlake’s operations, he will be also play a key role in working with clients to help them achieve productivity and efficiency gains, as they implement the growth strategies that Redlake has outlined for them” says CEO, Christine Regan Lake.

Mr. Gomez has 19 years of experience designing and implementing creative solutions to business challenges, for both startup and Fortune 100 companies. Mr. Gomez states, What excites me most about my role at Redlake Marketing is that it will enable me to leverage all of my key strengths and business experience to help build and achieve the aggressive vision that Christine has set for the company, while at the same time providing tangible, relevant results for Redlake’s clients.”

Mr. Gomez’s background spans multiple industries, where he has held senior management positions in all core business functions: core operations, finance, technology, marketing and business development. Having business process and technical expertise is unique, and this has enabled Scott to apply common sense technology to businesses in a manner that has profoundly impacted the bottom line for multiple companies. Scott most recently worked for The Nielsen Company (formally known as ACNielsen, which is the largest market research data company in the world) as National Director, Retail Technologies. In this role, Scott designed new business strategies and provided technical consultation to the largest retailers in the United States. Through his understanding of process improvement methodologies and technology coupled with effective client interaction Scott was able to reduce product delivery times from 18 months to 30 days and produce a revolutionary new client capability for one-fifth the original cost estimate. Prior to Nielsen, Mr. Gomez worked for UCCnet (now GS1), which was an industry standards initiative, charged with enabling accurate business communications across multiple industries. At UCCnet, Mr. Gomez provided strategic direction and technical consultation to both small businesses, as well as Fortune 100 companies. Internally at Scott worked closely with the executive team where he lead changes to market strategy and carved down expenses from the annual budget by over 73%.

Scott started his career in 1988 with American Ref-Fuel, one of the largest waste-to-energy companies in the United States, where he managed operations for their power facilities. In a dual role, Scott also initiated new business processes, and designed and implemented key technologies acting as trusted advisor to the executive team. Scott was responsible for the $200 million annual expense budget and in less then 1 year he was able to reduce expenses by $9 million. Scott is a skilled practitioner of six sigma methodologies; activity based costing, and lean and agile practices.

“One of the things that I find so amazing is how aligned Scott is to our thinking, and how well he connects with our core management team. From the start, he has immediately grasped our vision, and provided insight on how we could best harness technology to deliver on our value proposition both nationally and internationally, as we grow. He is a phenomenal asset to Redlake as well as our clients.”

It’s Only the Music, Right?!

By Mike Lake

Notes Why does music always seem to be considered secondary to video in so many multimedia productions? It’s too often an afterthought. Perhaps it’s because we think that what we see is more important that what we hear. After all, haven’t we always been told that a picture is worth a thousand words? Maybe it’s time to rethink that cliche.

Probably because I’m a musician by training, I actually believe that the music is more important that the visual. After all, in most multimedia pieces, it’s the emotion that drives the viewer–and it’s the music that drives the emotion. I’m not talking about an academic presentation on the history of cement, even though…

“How Long Should Our Video Be?”

By Mike Lake

What was the last really good movie you saw? Did it seem too long? Were you preoccupied with your watch or the time displayed on your cell phone? Of course not.

I am asked the question in the title of this post almost every time I discuss the creation of an event or corporate video for a client. They usually have a length in mind of about 4 minutes, and upon asking me how long their video should be, my answer is always the same: “It depends.” My follow-up answer is that time is not very relevant if the content is great. And, you prove that every time you watch a great film or read a captivating book and lose all awareness of time.

Seldom does a video end up being the exact length originally discussed. Once production has begun, the client adds content here and there, and sometimes…
